I'd personally like to keep everything (aside from necessities) sold within the community. Considering food is already available in the shop, it would be much preferable for players to interact to sell/buy/trade other goods that they need.

You'll always get a prior warning before the plot is taken, but yes, at some point, you'll need to build something on the plot or it will be taken to be sold to another player who is in need of it.
